Abstract | Undoubtedly, every young dancer aspires to be an expert technician and artistically dazzling. Working toward that end, a dancer is aware that he or she needs to spend many hours of practice in technique classes and on the stage. However, a dancer might not consider the fact that to become the best dancer possible, he or she needs equal abilities in the skills of motor learning. When applied to dance, motor learning can address such areas as attention, memory, instructions, feedback, practice scheduling, learning styles, and more. From the student dancer perspective, motor learning concerns questions such as these: What should I be focusing on during a teacher's instructions or feedback? How frequently should I practice a skill? What is involved in memorizing a dance sequence? Why do I feel overwhelmed by information? When and how much should I practice a skill on my "bad," or nondominant side? How can I more purposefully use the mirror to support my dance learning? In the end, a dancer who develops and sustains curiosity about how the dancing body learns by reading, experimenting, and applying motor learning principles of attention, specificity, variability, and many others on a daily basis can become not only an extraordinary learner, but also an extraordinary dancer!
