Abstract | It is the responsibility of special educators to understand and interpret the results of high-stakes assessments for educational purposes and for communication to parents. To help teachers understand and accurately communicate high-stakes testing results, the authors describe a set of research-based strategies in the "RISC" process: Review, Interpret, Streamline, and Communicate. Through the RISC process, special educators can be better prepared to collaborate with parents to interpret and use the results of statewide high-stakes assessments. The RISC process provides teachers with several strategies and tools to assist them in evaluating the degree to which their state's assessment score reports align with research and recommended practices for reporting assessment results to parents, and in interpreting and communicating the results to parents.
