AbstractThis article provides responses from academic neurologist Navid Seraji-Bozorgzad to questions posed by Don Ambrose. After moving from Iran to the United States in 1984, Navid Seraji-Bozorgzad attended The Roeper School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan for high school. He studied physics as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. After graduation, he worked as a software programmer for a few years and then joined a group of physicists and psychiatrists at the Wayne State University Department of Psychiatry who were using brain imaging to understand how medications used to treat bipolar disorder affect the brain. During this time, Navid decided to go to medical school, hoping to eventually work in academic medicine. He enrolled in Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine and neurology. Navid then joined the faculty at the Department of Neurology and continued his work in the area of neuroimaging. In addition to seeing patients and doing research, he served as the residency program director at Wayne State University until 2018, when he accepted a position in the University of Michigan Neurology Department. He currently works as a clinical assistant professor of neurology, in the area of cognitive neurology and neuroimaging. Topics covered in the interview include: typical work performed as an academic neurologist, what is needed to be successful in the field, influential mentors, a "typical" work day, rewarding aspects of this line of work, and advice for a gifted, talented young person who is interested in pursuing a career in this field.
