AbstractIt is difficult for students who are just being introduced to major geographical concepts to understand how relatively free countries like India or Mali can have such high levels of human rights abuses as child brides, dowry deaths, and domestic violence. Textbooks explain it and video clips show examples, but it still seems surreal to teenagers who are used to the U.S. definition of freedom and human rights. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) helps to deepen students' levels of thinking because they cannot ignore the connections and relationships they are observing on the maps and in the data. ArcGIS Online (AGO) makes analysis using GIS easy because it is user friendly but also just challenging enough to help refine student's technical knowledge. For these reasons, using AGO to study issues such as women's empowerment is much more powerful than other pedagogical tools. This lesson for high school students is designed to take place for two class periods. Students read about child marriage in the Arab world and use ArcGIS Online to explore factors related to women's empowerment. (ERIC).
