Abstract | Youth and young adults with disabilities who make the transition out of secondary settings face formidable odds. For example, they confront challenges in regard to attaining employment and becoming involved in postsecondary education. In many cases, their efforts are unsuccessful. One way to support the transition from school to employment or postsecondary education may be to guide the student in developing a self-directed summary of performance (SD SOP): a student-developed compendium of files describing a student's strengths, needs, and accommodations. An SD SOP serves as a useful way for the student to present her or his characteristics and accomplishments to future audiences. In addition, developing an SD SOP may provide an avenue for students to learn crucial transition skills, such as self-advocacy and communication of one's strengths and interests. The SD SOP may be one avenue allowing students with disabilities to promote their status as they plan for the transition out of secondary settings. As a product representing a student's development and performance in school, the SD SOP may also generate interest among researchers, students, families, and teachers. For students and special education teachers, SD SOPs may increase opportunities for self expression and connections with the adult world. (ERIC). |
