Abstract | Getting students interested in events that are distant in time and space is an ongoing challenge in education. In this article, the authors demonstrate how learning at the sites where historical events happened abroad engages undergraduate students by reducing the effects of time and distance. Using student quotations gathered during three short-term education-abroad trips to Germany over the last three years as evidence, they show how on-site learning at Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the Bernauer Strasse Berlin Wall Memorial in Berlin not only engaged students but also helped them reach a wider variety of learning goals than can typically be achieved in a traditional classroom. The authors also discuss some limitations of short-term education-abroad programs and how those related to learning can be overcome through carefully developed learning goals and activities designed to reach these goals. They argue that with thorough planning, education abroad at the sites where events took place can have huge benefits for students. (ERIC). |
