AbstractResearch, reflection, and evaluation of online classes indicated a need for graduated scaffolding for first time students experiencing distance learning. In order to promote student engagement in the online learning process, I designed SOS for beginning online students. Sixty-three online students were offered an opportunity to participate in a graduated scaffolding program; 22 students (34.9%) responded positively to the scaffolding program presented herein. Student's need and use of SOS was analyzed according to the responses of 22 undergraduate students (34.9%) who responded to the opportunity (SOS Success Step One). Of those 22 students, 26.9% completed a short questionnaire and submitted it to the assignments area of the online course (SOS Success Step Two). The same students (26.9%) requested their scaffolding report and individual feedback (SOS Success Step Three). Fewer students (17.4%) requested a plan for their studies and future success (SOS Success Step Four). The last remaining tenacious students (6.3%) participated in an online discussion area (SOS Success Step Five). Of those tenacious students, 3 students (4.7%) proudly met with me at the end of the semester to celebrate completion and mastery of the online experience. (As Provided).
