Abstract | This special issue expands our understanding of teaching and learning through video game play, with specific attention to culture. The issue gives insight into the ways educators, researchers, and developers should be discussing and designing for impactful learner-centered game-based learning experiences. The issue features forward-thinking game-based learning scholars and designers. The issue begins with a theoretical dialogue on digital affinity spaces, then moves into a discussion of the impact of culture throughout the game-based learning community. Subsequently, the issue discusses game-based implementation in K-16 education, pro-social game development, and professional competitive gaming culture, including a professional gamer's memoir.
