Abstract | This essay makes the case that while theory plays a vital role in the context of disciplinary research and scholarship, it has had little meaningful impact on the discourses, policies, and practices of contemporary higher education. This lack of theoretical engagement is not value-neutral, but has had devastating consequences in terms of higher education's inability to resist neoliberal rationalities and conceptualize new possibilities for practice.
