AbstractAyamel is a system developed by Brigham Young University (BYU) and the American Councils for International Education. "Ayamel" is a stylized name developed to stand for International Media Library, a new designation for the federally funded project that started out as the "Flagship Media Library." The project was funded by The Language Flagship, "a national initiative to change the way Americans learn languages through a groundbreaking approach to language education for students from kindergarten through college." The system is Web-based and provides the capability to upload, process, and annotate multimedia files, to include the creation and management of multilingual transcripts, captions, and translations. This tool facilitates the implementation of hybrid or blended learning, otherwise known as "flipping the classroom." In this article, Michael Bush illustrates how Ayamel brings together individualization, the value of video, flipping the classroom, and learning analytics in one state-of-the-art system. Bush begins by providing background of how Ayamel came about and supplements this with a modicum of language learning theory. A quick overview of Ayamel and its architecture follows. Before concluding, Bush discusses the implications the system has for classroom teachers as well as benefits for using the system for conducting research. (ERIC).
