Abstract | The activity described in this paper was developed in response to the experience of teaching a large lecture introduction course to freshman and sophomore undergraduates called "The Rhetorical Tradition." This course covers, roughly, the last 2500 years of rhetoric. One of the issues faced in this course is that students struggle to develop an interest and connection to ancient Roman theorists and theories, in this case Quintilian. As such, this activity offers an approach to ignite student interest while teaching rhetorical theories and values associated with civic engagement and oration--the use of spoken word poetry. This single class discussion activity enables students to explain Quintilian's "good man theory" of civic oration and apply it to present day civic engagement. (ERIC). |
