| Abstract | For some time, this author had been planning to write a column about Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs). He hesitated, however, mainly because there had of late been so much written and published on this topic that is was difficult to see what could usefully be added. He does have strong feelings about the topic, which he would like to share and invite comment and debate. Recently the idea came up that a useful addition would be a case study--but a special style of case, written as a story developing over an extended timeline. This article first defines MOOCs, and explains that although the technology for offering MOOCs is still changing and developing, the idea of free, open, online courses is turning the world of higher education on its head. Then the author goes on to present a scenario of how an educational innovation such as the MOOC might be invented, then accepted as a trend, and then either "die the death" or "thrive and prosper," depending on a whole range of factors, many of which have little to do with the specific technologies employed. The story unfolds over a time period of half a century, marked by milestones labeled Years 1 to 50--written so as to suggest that we could be talking about any innovation at any period in history. Alexander J. Romiszowski hopes, that as the story unfolds, his own answers to the question posed in the title of this column will become apparent. (ERIC). |
