| Abstract | What is count as fair and just treatment of persons in providing for their education is a rather complex question. Most can agree that treating persons justly requires treating them equally in some sense. But there is both confusion and contention about how the principle of equality is to be interpreted for the purpose of judging the justness of educational arrangements. This paper will have two foci: 1) explication of criteria for applying the principle of equality in judging equality of access to education, and 2) discussion of the application of these criteria to the major issues of educational equity currently on the public agenda.
