Abstract | Over the last decade (2009-2019), the academic discussion and research in the field of German as a second language (GSL)-didactics have been influenced by three main developments: first, research that encourages empirically and linguistically based GSL-teaching and its didactics; second, efforts to support students in gradually acquiring more abstract and academic language and establish systematic language learning in content-matter classrooms; and third, consequences of recent migration processes for the educational system and its teachers and learners. The article gives an overview over six central fields of research and discussion2 that are mainly influenced by those three developments: (1) GSL, multilingualism and migration; (2) GSL in kindergarten, school and professional learning contexts; (3) developments in diagnostics; (4) GSL-courses for minors and adults; (5) teaching literacy, lexic and grammar; (6) teacher qualification. It will be shown how despite many new developments in GSL-didactics, there is still a great need for research in the described fields. (Verlag). |
