AbstractIn this article, we report on a project conducted at the University of Graz with students studying to be sports/English teachers. The project was designed primarily to explore the commonalities of teaching the two skill-based subjects and prompt students to critically reflect on the experience of teaching and learning sport and/or English. Languagewise, the course itself runs in a mixture of English and German. We encourage the sports students to use English - if this is not their main language. The experience of being made a little unsure and uncomfortable serves as a useful reminder of how students may feel in our classes in school. Similarly, any English students are encouraged to try new sports and share that feeling of potentially being out of their comfort zone and being pushed into a learning zone. We explore aspects of skill development and affective dimensions surrounding learning per se as well as our shared belief in the ability of these two subjects to accommodate a dual focus on teaching the respective subject alongside other life skills. The focus is on helping students to see the commonalities and the uniqueness of the two subjects and insights that can be transferred across the two subjects and their respective pedagogies. In this article, we highlight five main areas of similarity that we have focused on with our students in the course. These are: (1) Attitude of learning; (2) Team spirit; (3) Mastery goals and vision; (4) Effective communication; and (5) Life skills. (Autor).
