Abstract | The need for using the competency-based culturological approach to promote readiness for intercultural communication was explained in the given paper. In view of the competency-based culturological approach the variability of education is based on the principles that proceed from cultural pluralism and identity of each culture, which is a unique variety of opportunities for their equal dialogue relying on breaking in the traditions and values of different nations, their mutual understanding and mutual enrichment. According to the authors' research, the proposed competency-based culturological approach provides personal meaningful development of students, enables them to feel confident in the different types of cultures, civilizations and rules of communication correlated with them, to adequately interpret cultural facts and phenomena and to choose the right strategy for working in different types of cross-cultural communication. The competency-based culturological approach is characterized by studying social subcultures in addition to national cultures. Thus, students get an idea of the values and lifestyles of different social classes. All this is aimed at the development of the empathic attitude of students to the people belonging to different ethnic groups, various social strata, political and economic systems and at teaching to consider these differences in cross-cultural communication.
