Abstract | Examined the hypothesis that perceived competence moderates the relation between performance approach and performance avoidance goals. A total of 416 adults (mean age 23 years) participated in 4 studies. In Studies 1 and 2, general perceived competency (Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory), achievement goals (Achievement Goal Questionnaire, AGQ), competence expectancy (Study 1), and general self-efficacy (New General Self-Efficacy Scale, Study 2) were assessed. In Studies 3 and 4, perceived competence for an upcoming task was manipulated, and achievement goals were assessed using the AGQ (Study 3) or an achievement goal grid measure (Study 4). Results showed that correlation between the achievement approach and achievement avoidance goals was lower when perceived competence is high. This pattern was observed at the between- and within-subject level of analysis, with correlational and experimental methods, and using both standard and novel achievement goal assessments, multiple operationalizations of perceived competence, and several different types of focal tasks.
