Abstract | At the University of Frankfurt/Main, from 1929 on there developed a distinct school of thought within the Educational Sciences. Its representatives were Paul Tillich (1886-1965), Carl Mennicke (1887-1959) and Hans Weil (1898-1972). It was characterised by its interconnectedness with other academic disciplines, particularity its orientation towards the Social Sciences. Before this new approach in the Educational Sciences could fully develop its potential, it came to an end in 1933 by intervention of the Nationalsocialist state. The three aforementioned scholars lost their teaching positions and were forced to leave the country, for their political convictions and in part for their so-called racial identity. After World War II only Carl Mennicke returned from his exile in the Netherlands (without ever giving up the close ties to that country where he had found a new home and has had a lasting influence as a scholar and a teacher). In Germany before and after his exile his main impact was on his students, whereas his theories were not adequately received by an increasingly specialised and depoliticised Educational Science. The focus of the article is on the history of the research into the "Frankfurter Pädagogik" during the last decades. (DIPF/Orig.). |
