| Abstract | The goal of political education both inside and outside of schools is to prepare pupils for their future roles as citizens, equipping them to this end with a political and democratic identity. To achieve this goal, political education must lead young people to understand what a democratic order means as an interpretive scheme - this by stressing the importance of human rights to the running of a democratic society. This is the first point, which we call the rational dimension, since it adresses the inner aspects of this overriding goal. The second point to stress is that for our young people a sense of civil liberty must be palpable in daily life, a sense best gained by having them participate. It is imperative therefore for political education to choose pupil-oriented methods. This we call the emotional dimension. (DIPF/Orig.). |
