Abstract | The article gives a history of long research work started in 2001. This work aims to assess the effects of the implementation of a particular math teaching device called "mathematics research", in a school aiming to follow Freinet educational methods. After describing so me of the distinctive features of this device, it explains the decisions taken on a theoretical and methodological level: comparing different behaviours of students faced with punishment tasks, followed by direct observations in class. Some results can then be drawn. They concern, above all, the links between disciplinary skills, attitudes towards error, argumentation attitudes specific to the pupils questioned, and observations revealing specific attitudes to error as well as their recording of time and place within the classroom.
