Abstract | In this article, the author, who is the state superintendent of Public Instruction for the Ohio Department of Education, describes the tasks and challenges she faced when she came to Ohio five years ago and the work and reforms she and her team have undertaken to improve both the Department of Education and the educational system. The main goals were to set "clear and high academic content standards" for all students, "to build the capacity of schools with both fiscal and human rescource systems, and ... to improve results". The author also describes the implementation of the "No Child Left Behind Act" of 2001 in Ohio. She ends with an overview of the results so far and of the challenges that still exist.
