Abstract | This paper provides commentaries on the report "Higher Education in Developing Countries" (Task force Report; web site: http://www.tfhe. net) which "is perhaps the most wide-ranging discussion of issues facing higher education in developing countries in many decades. In part it analyzes the current state of higher education in developing countries. In part it is a plea for governments and the policy community to focus on higher education after a long period of neglect. And, in part, it recommends future directions for higher education." Philip Altbach gives an introduction to the report; Richard Hopper comments on the impact of the report on programs and priorities of the World Bank; George Psacharopoulos discusses the empirical basis of the Task force conclusions; David Bloom and Henry Rosovsky (principal authors of the report) "offer their perspective on the impact of the report since its release."
