| Abstract | Reflecting on his involvement in the composition of "administrator competency statements" in the Province of Ontario, the author examines the relationship and the differences between accountability and the current quest for standards in the field of education. Making reference to the concept of "language-games" developed by Wittgenstein, he argues that the attempt to reduce complex and exclusive questions of educational accountability to monitored compliance with unambiguous standards is conceptually misleading and pragmatically unproductive. The focus upon leadership standards is traced to Frederick Taylor's engineering sub-discipline of scientific management, which was preoccupied with finding the "one best method" for the accomplishment of work. Following Gilbert Ryle's distinction between "knowing that" and "knowing how", and underscoring the value of professional discernment, the author concludes that leadership standards and their implementation may solve the problem of compliance at the cost of depriving education of the very leaders needed to meet the varied and often unpredictable issues characteristic of irreducibly human enterprises.
