AbstractAchievement-motivation and related Western concepts have entered the local discourse on formal education in the multiethnic, multiracial South Pacific nation of Fiji, offering a case study on the impact of Western theoretical hegemony in educational discourse in a non- Western society. . .. [The discourse] is dominated by the theme of ethnic or racial difference as an index for differential achievement- motivation and differences in the valuation of formal education. Western discourse on formal education has helped define the local discourse on both the academic and popular front. ... This article ... considers how the themes of achievement-motivation, differential valuation of education, and cultural deficit theory have found accomodation in the surviving colonial discourse in Fiji. It also explores the ways that Fijian discoursive practice both accomodate and challenge this discourse. [Empirical sources for this research were: participant observation in 13 secondary schools and interviews with teachers, administrators, parents and pupils and other informants. The article first outlines] the major themes of colonial discourse and its relationship to colonial policies, emphasizing the policies that have had an impact on differential educational attainment in Fiji. [It then discusses] the development of discourse on formal education, focusing on the impact of the 1969 Fiji Education Commission report ... The impact of this report on subsequent discussions of formal education, academic theory, and polular wisdom about formal education is then explored. (DIPF/Orig./Bi.)
