AbstractThis yearbook suggests that much of the answer about the difficulty of changing schools may be found in insights about the potency of the 'deep structures' embedded in school institutions - insights derived from ... social science theory and research called the 'new institutionalsm' ... Part I of the yearbook is devoted to five chapters that examine some reinvention-oriented theorizing for public education, and these theoretical insights relate to the new institutionalism. ... The intent is to provide some illustrative pieces of theoretical framing .. . around the twin subjects of education politics and reinvented schooling. ... What is to be found in new institutional theorizing that can be instructive in the practical taks of reinventing schools? Part II provides six chapters that directly address this question. ... (They) cover just a sample of the reinventing-the-school topics that could be instructively analyzed from the new instititutional perspective. ... It is still unclear how much utility the new institutional theorizing offers in the strategic task of improving public education. If institutions matter, what is yet to be learned in depth about their politics, social structures and performances before we can begin to employ these insights effectively in school improvement. ... Part III includes a set of chapters that offer a critique and analytical appraisal of new institutional thinking vis-a-vis the politics of education and school renewal. (DIPF/Text übernommen)
