AbstractFrom an analysis of the differentiation in academic secondary education ( differentiation of subjects, vertical differentiation within subjects, association between differentiation and inequality) the authors developed hypotheses "regarding the varied impact of curriculum differentiation on level of achievement and social inequality in achievement", which were tested empirically with data from the two countries. "The findings show [among others] that, in Israel a more differentiated curriculum is associated with higher average achievement in both English and mathematics. The association between differentiation and the impact of parents' education was especially strong with English, as reflected in the substantial portion of variance explained. In contrast to the findings for Israel, the analyses for the United States showed that more differentiation, as reflected in the diversity of student course taking, is associated with lower average achievement (productivity) and with wider gaps between minorities and whites and between students of low and high socioeconomic status (inequality). In general, differentiation mattered more to disadvantaged students in both countries." (DIPF/Bi.)
