| Abstract | The author writes: "The central thesis of this article is that previous analyses of Cambodia's rarely examined educational development, by inadequately addressing questions of history and culture, have failed to recognize the important tensions between the competing demands of tradition and modernity that have characterized that development. [ To analyse this crisis] I begin with examining the various approaches of development discourse to the question of education and to the educational crisis. I suggest that, in order for the educational crisis to be more fully understood, there is a need to move beyond the conceptual framework provided by development discourse so that history and culture can be addressed. I then shift attention to Cambodia, giving a brief review of the traditional and precolonial educational settings. [Then] I review Cambodia's postindependence educational development and account for the prevailing crisis of that development. (DIPF/orig.) |
