| Abstract | In this article, we attempt to gain a better understanding of the role labor markets may play in determining regional enrollment differences in developing countries. In order to investigate possible variations in this relationship, we analyze the linkages between labor sectors and educational enrollments in Thailand and Kenya. These countries have similar levels of primary and secondary enrollments but exhibit substantial variation in the size of their labor sectors, particularly their modern labor sectors. ... We begin with a discussion of conventional notions about the labor market / school enrollment relationship for developing countries. The multivariate analyses that follow use aggregate regional data from Kenya and Thailand in order to investigate the relationship between employment opportunities in the agricultural, manufacturing, and service sectors and local secondary enrollments in both countries. ... We also analyze the influence of different labor sectors on male and female enrollment rates. ... Our goal is to test competing theories that make different predictions regarding the strength and direction of this relationship, and cross-sectional analyses can provide valuable evidence to this end.
