AbstractAnalyzed data from the Munich Longitudinal Study of Individual Development (LOGIC) to investigate the development of verbal memory strategies, to compare developmental trajectories of different memory components, and to study the impact of different educational contexts on memory development. Data of 165 children assessed in the LOGIC Study spanning the ages 8, 10, 12, and 17 were reanalyzed, including organizational strategies, memory capacity, text memory, verbal memory, and verbal and nonverbal intelligence. Stability over time was moderate for recall and low for strategy use, but intercorrelations between strategy use and recall were already high at age 10. Intercorrelations among the different memory components were only moderate: the developmental pattern did not change with age. There were no differences in verbal development across different educational tracks. In summary, an increase in memory strategy use with age could not be demonstrated, and developmental patterns were roughly similar across different verbal tasks and school types. (ZPID).
