Abstract	This paper presents data from a project on moral motivation. It is more pragmatically framed on what it is that attracts students to "untrendy" fields and makes them want to do a good job. As the value structure in society changes and the battle for students hardens, there is a growing concern that fields crucial to the development of society may lose out in the competition for the best students. Among the fields that have received attention in these debates are nursing and social work. In part, this is due to the fact that these fields have already experienced a decline in applicants which merits concern, and in part due to the image these studies project. In the debate on intake qualities focus has primarily been on the academic quality of the students, and less on the motivational qualities that work of this type implies. The data presented here highlights qualities related to this dimension of professional work. (HRK/text adopted).
