Abstract | The author first describes the "relative success of Australian universities in internationalizing their activities and profiles." Through analysing the concepts of internationalization and globalization, he wants to lay the ground for examining whether Australian universities are "genuinely internationalized, or are more globalized." Three statistically proved facts are taken as empirical basis: 1) The "international student market" has operated in favour of Australia - the growth rates of foreign students numbers are larger than in the USA in the late 1990s; this is "driven by economic globalization". 2) Similarly the academic staff has internationalized - Australia was attractive to foreign academics. 3) Similarly, programs and curricula have internationalized. The remainder of the article shows that this impressive progress "in terms of the extent of international activities" has "much to do with the complex, convoluted, and contested phenomenon of globalization." In short, "the extension of global capitalism", a world "in which business activity is primary, and political power has no other tasks than the protection of the world free- trading system" have forced the mentioned internationalization in Australia's higher education.
