Abstract | The French "overseas territory" of New Caledonia has an indigenous population of 45 %: the Kanaks. Two agreements with the French government (1988 and 1998) set out consensual solutions of the conflicts between the Kanak and the French communities, ensuring more autonomy and influence for the Kanaks. The article describes the widening of the representation of Kanak culture in the schools and the adaptation of teaching methods and learning to this culture. Kanak learning is "customary learning" (coutume) - its influences and increased consideration in schools is analysed. (DIPF/ Bi.) |
