Abstract | At the close of the twentieth century, culture has assumed central importance in the analysis of contemporary social life. ... Yet, ... debate rages in anthropology over the concept that it, more than any other discipline, helped to 'put on the map'. This article argues that while comparative education has also been increasingly receptive to ideas of culture in the framing of its theory and research, the field lacks engagement with some of the central theoretical debates surrounding culture that have been ongoing in anthropology for some time. Furthermore, in still far too many instances culture appears only peripherally, if at all, in the conceptualization of problems, research paradigms, and development theory in comparative studies. I thus argue for a recentered discourse on culture in comparative education that recognizes the value of cultural inquiry. ... [The paper considers] the relevance of contemporary anthropological critiques of the culture concept for comparative education, illustrating some of the difficulties associated with uses of culture, as well as some of the areas in which culture- oriented inquiry may potentially be productive.
