Abstract | This article aims at providing a global overview of school failure in Portugal, regarding it as a complex social and educational problem. It opens by defining the place of school failure within the Portuguese education system and by tracing its causes. It later explores types and forms of assessment in force in basic and secondary education and analyses these in terms of achievement rates of students and of the dropout rates which contribute to aggravate the problem. Finally, reference is made to some measures that are presently being taken to combat it. (DIPF/orig.) |
