Abstract | The University of Amsterdam has organized an introductory course at the interface between the natural and the social sciences. The objective has been to enable students to make a more rational choice of a disciplinary perspective. In this article, we report on the background philosophy, the theoretical course structure as implemented on 1 September 1996 and the changing patterns of student choices evident on the basis of the first trimester.
