| Abstract | Introductory article to a special issue about the "uncertain future" of the academic profession which "faces a number of substantial challenges". The authorr names these challenges as: the corrosion of the canon of knowledge raised by "claims and critiques of postmodernism"; the decline of disciplin(s); the changing face of pedagogy; the emergence of "virtual pedagogy" and the "increasing diversification of education and training"; the changing face of students (transition to mass higher education); the changing context for the profession: the "cult of efficiency" and "the pressure to do more"; the challenge of internationalization.
