| Abstract | In spring 1992 a questionnaire was sent to academics (in the EU member states) who had received ERASMUS support for teaching at a higher education institution of another European Community member in the academic year 1990-91. The data are from the responses of 485 persons - 55.3 per cent of the target group whose addresses were available. The questionnaire addresses the academics' experiences and involvement in ERASMUS and problems faced preparing for the period abroad, the academic activities abroad, the language of instruction, financial matters involved, problems faced abroad, and the administrative procedures. It also probed expected impacts on institutions, and departments and suggestions for improvement. The study was undertaken by members of Germany's Center for Research on Higher Education and Work at the Comprehensive University of Kassel. This team also surveyed ERASMUS Interuniversity Co-operation Programme (ICP) students and European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) students in the same academic year, the responses to which influenced the interpretation of the findings reported here. This article gives an overview on the ERASMUS teaching staff experience as derived from the major findings of the ERASMUS evaluation research project, a pre- publication report and unpublished material provided by the research team.
