Abstract | In this study, we compare immigrant secondary school dropouts to those born in Canada, using a group of social, psychological, and academic characteristics linked to school leaving. Among these variables, the reasons young people offered to explain their decision to leave school, who they see as responsible for their dropping out, and their satisfaction with the school system received particular attention. In the context of a major urban community where immigration is increasing, the differences between these two groups were significant. These differences were interpreted in the light of a theoretical framework focusing on youth values. The lack of importance of school learning for certain dropouts proved to be one explanatory factor for dropping out. This leads to suggest that interventions aimed at encouraging students to stay in school would be more effective if they took account of the role played by young people's academic values.
