| Abstract | The author gives a description of a research project which "sought to find out the reasons behind primary school age girls' lack of access to primary school in Iran, either due to the fact that they have never attended school or that they dropped out before completion." In three provinces with the highest gender gap in primary education 140 teachers and principals, 316 school drop-out girls and 383 parents of drop-out girls or girls who never attended schools were interviewed. The research revealed as reasons for girls' lacking primary education: a) cultural factors (e.g. traditional thinking about girls and girls' education, cultural poverty), b) economic factors (e.g. economic poverty, girls must help in housework or work otherwise for the family), and c) educational factors ( e.g. absence of female teachers, lack of opportunity to continue education, lack of follow-up by responsible officials.
