Abstract | " Socialization consists of the reproduction of social values and behaviors, as the goal and praxis of most interactions between adults and youths. At once essential for social stability and survival and, seemingly, the inevitable result of intergenerational interaction, parent-child correlation was traditionally regarded as the natural order in the study of socialization." Seen from this perspective, Israel of 1988 appears as an abberant society where [parents] faced political disagreements with and challenges from their own children; the young generation overwhelmingly leaned toward the nationalistic right. In this article, the author rethinks "this assumed aberrance by situating it within a theory of socialization that is not refuted by debate and disagreement and for which intergenerational conflict does not signify the end of society". Empirical material from a survey of 400 Jewish and 200 Palestinian parent-child pairs and from observations of 50 Jewish and 15 Palestinian families watching and discussing television news was used (DIPF/IText übernommen/Bi) |
