| Abstract | The political changes, globalization and economic modernization in the world are also for educators "a special challenge and opportunity to address and redress these problems. The challenge is to reject false nationalism and through comparative science to help satisfy a worldwide hunger for a real democratization. The opportunity is to do research that celebrates cultural diversity and fosters social and political integration of peoples. Educators should reject the homogenization that follows from a centrally controlled world market. They should denounce the betrayal of democracy contained in the privatization of politics. Four major issues call for attention from those who pratice comparative education. These are the decline of democratic pratice and participation in the industrialized world, our own confusion as to why education does not help resolve this problem, the impact of economic globalization on education and on democratization, and the urgency for comparative research on cultural diversity rather than individual differentiation and on social integration rather than political and economic homogenization."
