| Abstract | The Spanish worker's movement came into existence towards the middle of the 19th century, and even in the initial stages of its formation, it supported a number of educational initiatives in association with democratic and republican sectors from the bourgeoisie. But it was really from the September Revolution (1868) onwards that popular education began to appear explicitly on its political agenda. During the Restoration, a number of changes were introduced, as a result of which, the area of popular education and the agents behind it underwent a far-reaching process of renewal. Although socialists and anarchists were the main agents in the field of popular education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, we cannot neglect the efforts developed both by social reformists and social catholics. The role played by socialists and anarchists in the adoption of a militant programme of popular education is the main focus of this paper. Both of them developed new ideas about the connection between education and revolution and set in motion a number of initiatives covering different fields: adult education, vocational training, education of the children of socialist and anarchists workers, cultural and artistic activities. Their educational ideas, initiatives and programmes are extensively analyzed in these pages. (DIPF/Abstract übernommen). |
