Abstract | "In ancient China and, to a lesser extent, Korea and Japan, the host of gods and spirits that grew around the state civil service examinations (keju) produced a lasting respect for the status structure molded by that system." During the twentieth century the influence of religion has been reduced. "This article explores the extent to which religion still plays a role in a today's exam-centered system, arguably one of the most rationalistic aspects od modern life and the gateway to socioacademic mobility in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea." The author looks at such devices for influencing good exam results as prayers, pilgrimages to religious shrines, paid ritual supplication, or diverse sorts of charm. (DIPF/Text übernommen/Bi.). |
