AbstractClassroom climate is associated with learning outcomes. In the case of non-Western classrooms "there is a need to focus on the socio- cultural parts of the classroom climate, which are of the utmost importance in the teaching - learning process.... Identifying and measuring the socio-cultural factors intervening in classroom processes would help put in proper perspective the role which socio- cultural factors play in the guided study and learning of science. In developing, non-Western cultures where scientific knowledge and interpretations of natural phenomena, or instructional methods, and of teacher and student behaviour are at variance with the prevailing global conventions, the socio-cultural dimensions of classroom climate become important." The paper reports on a study in which 151 female and 175 male students of secondary "Vacation Schools" in Nigeria were given a Socio-Cultural Environment Scale. This scale should help to answer the following research questions: 1) How do ... secondary school students perceive the socio-cultural environment of their science classrooms? 2) Do male and female ... students prefer the same type of socio-cultural environment for their science clsssrooms? 3) What socio-cultural factors are associated with gender with regard to the science classroom environment perceived and preferred by secondary school students?"
