| Abstract | This article "charts changes currently taking place in intercultural and civic education in Bulgaria. It argues that these changes cannot be analysed without taking account of the complex history of the development of Bulgarian nationalism" ... "The first section discusses the complexity of meanings attached to the concept of 'nation' and examines the hegemonic importance that the variables of ethnicity, language and culture play in the maintenance of the nation-state ... The second section investigates the nature of some of the political changes ... during the early years of sovietisation ...The third section addresses the mass displacement and forced name-change policies pursued against ... minority groups during various periods of nationalist revivalism since the Second World War ... The fourth section explores the role of education in shaping the consciousness of pupils in terms of an inclusive and cohesive nationhood and discusses attempts made within this area to educate pupils to participate actively as citizens within a democratic society"...
