| Abstract | The Netherlands has seven school systems supported by public funds and is said to be a "pillarized society". The authors define pillarization as a process resulting in parallel, segregated organizational complexes, structured along religious lines and active in the secular domains of life, resulting in more or less isolated groups living separately, each, as it were, within its own societal pillar. Their examination of a Dutch national sample for the influence of a number of religious factors - belief, salience of religion, and participation in religious activities - on educational attainment illustrates that religion is not only an important force in the formation of educational systems but also continues to shape values, attitudes, and careers. In the Netherlands and many other societies, even when church attendance and other discernible religious behavior decline, religion continues to be - subtly but considerably - important in the formation of personal and collective attitudes toward moral issues, the rituals of family life, the election of public officials, and the shaping of the political discourse agenda.
