Abstract"Bullying is the tendency for some children to frequently oppress, harrass or intimidate other children, verbally, physically or both. ... A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, regularly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one of more persons. This is the working definition adopted for this study." 416 secondary school pupils from 6 boarding schools were told a story about an adolescent pupil whose life had been made a misery at school owing to a constant bullying. The pupils were asked to comment and discuss how the story related to their own experience and to fill in a questionnaire about bullying behaviour; their 16 teachers were given the same questionnaire. The results show that at least 10 % of the pupils were at some time involved in bullying to a marked degree, whether as bully or victim. (DIPF/Text uebernommen/Bi.)
