AbstractThis paper is chiefly concerned with the remnants of empire decolonised at the end of the twentieth century. It makes some remarks about all these territories, but pays particular attention to the one with the largest population and economy, Hong Kong; to its neighbour Macau; and to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (i. e. the Marianes, Marshall Islands and Palau). The paper agrues that the paradigms developed for analysis of education in previous decolonisation eras require modification to fit the patterns at the close of the century. One striking difference ist that whereas decolonisation in the 1950s and 1960s was a very rapid process, lead times in the 1980s and 1990s have been much greater. A second difference is that the majority of territories decolonised at the end of the century moved not to full sovereignty but either to forma of associated statehood or to reintegration with an original mother country. Thirdly, whereas many decolonisation exercises in the main era of decolonisation were conducted witz reluctance or opposition on the part of the metropolitan poiwers, by the end of the century (they) were quite keen to dispose of their colonies. These factors hade major implications for education as well as for other social sectors. By highlighting the ways that patterns in remnants of empire differ from those of territories decolonised during the main era, the paper contributes to understanding of the latter as well as of the former.
