Abstract | Many current literacy campaigns intended for indigenous peoples in Third World countries are reconceptualizations of earlier colonial projects and conform to the needs of late-modern capitalism. Early anthropology may have influenced the discourses surrounding literacy, but current anthropologists have charted important cultural and linguistic territories that provide vital information to use when conceptualizing indigenous literacy education. Anthropology can also play a role in supporting indigenizing modernities through literacy programs. (Author). |
