AbstractIn all settings, the social work profession thrives on multilevel (macro, mezzo, and micro practice), however recent data from a benchmark study of school social work professionals (Kelly, Berzin, Frey, Alvarez, Shaffer & O'Brien, 2010a) asserts that school social workers do not frequently practice macro level practice in the form of capacity building (e.g., family based work, school culture improvement, and community engagement). School social workers are mostly known to focus on individual therapeutic interventions with youth, even though it is purported that capacity building supports positive individual outcomes. Positive Youth Development (PYD) is a capacity building approach that encourages measurable individual outcomes. PYD foci are on building healthy communities and the belief that if youths are welcomed to participate in civic affairs as participants, not solely as recipients they tend to experience optimal development. This article highlights examples of capacity building (family based work in the form of parental involvement and community engagement via youth-led service learning projects) through the lens of PYD approach. Implications for school social work practice also are discussed. (Contains 1 footnote.) (As Provided).
